Places to check first

THAN SADET–KO PHA-NGAN NATIONAL PARK · 18 POSSIBLE CHANGE LOCATIONS · 31.2 HA

These are the 18 places where the satellite images show possible tree-cover loss. None of them has been checked on the ground yet. The list tells you where to look first. It does not tell you what happened there.

How the list is ordered

We put locations first where:

  1. they are clearly inside the mapped park area;
  2. the satellite change is strong (a bigger “greenness drop”, which is how far the satellite’s vegetation index fell between the two years);
  3. the affected area is larger.

Locations within 250 m of the mapped boundary are kept separate, because the available boundary is only an approximation.

Why the boundary matters

We could not find a reliable public digital map of the legal park boundary. The boundary used here is therefore an approximation, and this is the main uncertainty in the results. For that reason the list is ordered by how reliable each location is to act on, not simply by size.

A ranger could reasonably choose a different order depending on what they want to check first. The rule is stated here so it is clear and can be changed if needed.

Tier 1 · check these first

7 locations · 13.1 ha

These locations are clearly inside the mapped park area and show a strong satellite signal. Even if the boundary is wrong by up to 250 m, they remain inside the mapped area.

Tier 2 · check next

2 locations · 1.6 ha

These locations are clearly inside the mapped park area, but the satellite signal is weaker than in Tier 1.

Tier 3 · boundary uncertain

9 locations · 16.5 ha

These locations are within 250 m of the mapped boundary. Because the boundary is uncertain, we have kept them separate, to be looked at once the boundary is clearer, rather than treating them as definite park locations. The satellite signal can still be strong: the issue here is where the park boundary actually is.

What to record at each site

If someone visits a location, record:

And most importantly, record one of three outcomes: confirmed · not confirmed · cannot tell.

A not confirmed result is useful too. It tells us that the satellite signal did not match what was found on the ground, which helps us understand how reliable the method is.
